SAPLN - Adelaide city libraries

We can now re-encode City of Adelaide items using their ISIL code on the pull down menu –  instructions on the wall. Be careful not to put another RFID tag in Adelaide items and I suggest you make separate piles so you can encode “blocks” of items. Nathan

emergency phone

There is an emergency phone (currently) situated under the fax machine - in a white basket marked EMERGENCY PHONE. This is the phone we can use, or be contacted on, when there is no contact possible on other systems (eg when there is a power failure) or when we need a ready/available phone. Please answer it should it ring.

SAPLN owner institution

There will be a change to the way we encode items from other libraries in the consortium. There is an option in Settings to select the Owner Institution (ISIL) of material (currently this is set to Onkaparinga Library Service) – this is okay for COOL items -  but all other library items we are tagging need to be encoded as SAPLN (Most of the material in the Black crates) later there will be a separate option for City of Adelaide Libraries so please don’t encode these items yet.
I have put an instruction sheet on the wall above the PC in the check-in room but see details above. Nathan

Check-in room prompts

Due to some unnecessary errors being made, there are now some more detailed prompting notes in the checkin room to make sure that everyone is following the same process. Whilst there are multiple processes that work, it is best if we all do things the same way to avoid mistakes being made and assumptions being made that are not necessarily correct. Please familiarise yourself with, and follow the process that is stated, so that we can provide good service to our customers and avoid wasted time later down the track chasing up things that should not have happened in the first place. Karla

new iPads

There are 2 new public  iPads (orange), they are numbered 5 & 6.
Please note in the excel spreadsheet for the loaning of these, this is very important if logged onto the network. Ipads 1-4 will be for school use (but public can use also).
Customers can now connect directly to wireless network to access our catalogue without having to log-on, I’m not sure how we’re going to promote this but I have the link on the home page on all the iPads if you need to show customers. Nathan

youth audio books

Please be aware that teenage audio books are now located at the very last bay of the teenage fiction (with clear signage). If you can try to put all of these here instead of interfiling with adult ones, it would be great. Karla

customer requests

The Reader Request forms have now been updated to reflect the One Card network. Can we please now use these new forms, if anyone is photocopying them, please ensure that it is the updated one.
 For your information:
-In the first instance, Symphony should be checked, if we do not have a title, a PLAIN ILL is still possible for older items, particularly non-fiction titles
-Any items on Symphony which Onkaparinga do not have, ie are on order for other libraries and that then fall within the 90 day embargo, or new items that require an override to reserve, need to be requested for our customers, the LP team will usually purchase any title that falls within these parameters
-Customers from other library services who request new items to be purchased with pickup from outside our library service need to be referred back to their home library service for them to consider purchase. Angela

OPAC shut down

OPACs can now be shutdown in the usual way: Ctrl-Alt-DEL and shutdown. Nathan

volunteers

On the whiteboard there is now an added area ( under the ‘Huddle’ info ) for Magnetic Names for our volunteers.  When volunteers are IN they should place their name of the said day and remove it when they leave for lunch or the end of the day. Sally

buzzer

Just letting everyone know that the little doorbell buzzer to get help from the person in the checkin room, has been moved to below the bench of the computer on the desk with the RFID pad. This is probably a more useful spot than at the cash register because the school side is where we get the rushes. Karla

transit slips

From Wednesday the transit slips have been delivered by the system on the machine in the CKI room. We are trialing this across the network to see if there are any issues prior to adopting it network-wide. The Sort Assist machine does not produce these slips (as yet) but we are hopeful that this will occur soon.

using the cash register

from now on, every time you open the till using the NS (No Sale) button, please record your name, time and date and the reason why you have opened the cash register - Angela

RFID tagging

From NOW we will be adhering  the standard RFID tag to all items (Onkaparinga and SAPLN) that require a tag. The temporary tags will no longer be used.
From Thursday (tomorrow) we need to record the number of SAPLN items that we have tagged (for a week) to ascertain our consumption rate.
Please record each tagged SAPLN item (only) on the record sheet (on the clipboard in the CKI room). Albert

Year 12's

From now on, Year 12 students must show you their timetable if they come into the library to prove that they have a free. If they need to be in the library during a scheduled lesson, they must get a teacher note like everyone else.
Year 12’s are no longer allowed in whenever they feel like it. They must have a blank space on their timetable. If it is not blank, they require a note. * Please make sure you look at the correct time slot on their timetable to make sure it matches the lesson times.
This is how it currently works for year 11’s, now it applies to year 12s as well. This is a leadership decision and teachers have been made aware of this change. Please act on this immediately. Karla

changes

An OPAC has been returned to service, now located next to the sit-down OPAC near the community lounge...
and the public access computer reservation station has moved, closer to the public access computers (next to the graphic novels).

series boxes

You will notice in Children’s that there are boxes now for some series, this is a work in progress, and not all series will have a box. From now can you please reshelve all children’s books in the correct spot and not dump them on the trolley. I am attempting to interfile all the ones from the trolley onto the shelves! Angela

check-in changes

Now that heaps of our items have RFID tags in them, it is easier to check them in using the pad rather than the wand. This way, it is easier to know if things NEED tags as well, as they won’t be picked up by the scanner.
The way that I have been doing it, and I think has been working well is:
  • Put a pile of 3 items on the pad (can be any number but just an example)
  •  Wait for 3 beeps
  •  If 3 beeps, you know all 3 have RFID tags (it is good to keep an eye on the screen still to make sure the beeps are 3 different titles rather than one of them checking in twice)
  •   If only 2 beeps, check titles and check in the untagged item with wand. This item then goes on large white trolley next to check in desk to be tagged later.
  • The rest of them can be put back on the reshelving trolley.
When the crates come in, I have been putting the grey holds trolley back in its normal spot next to the desk, but at other times it is easier if the white one for untagged items is there.
Just remember when placing items on the check in desk, don’t put them too close to the pad. We haven’t put tape down to mark an area yet because I think we are seeing if this spot for the pad works. Karla

Children's series books

Books that are on the old AE shelves are all series that have got new spine labels to reflect their series and also they have been encoded. Please only put books on these shelves if they have the new spine label and have been encoded. (This is only a temporary measure and we will be looking at how we can best display these series in the future).
All series books will have their series on a spine label and that will be how they are shelved, for example, Star Wars will be shelved under STA. Not all series will be on the white shelves. Angela

children's series - changes

From today all new children’s fiction series will have a spine label to reflect their series. They will no longer have the author in the call number field but the series name instead. Jo and myself will be making retrospective changes one day, so (for now) don’t put any on our desk to change!
