start of school

A few things to please note and remember as school returns:

·         Students with overdues/lost items will not be allowed to loan class set items or personal items until last year’s items are returned. This will be in place for the first 2 weeks of school and is supported by the principal. Please do not override and check items out to these students.

·         All students entering the library without a class, must have a note in their diary. The only exception to this is if they are year 11 or 12 and have a blank spot on their timetable (and you must see the timetable). Students who have ‘study’ written in their timetable must go to the study hall to check in with the teacher, and get the study supervisor to write a note in their diary. Study periods are treated like lessons and students need to attend to get their name marked off of the roll before heading elsewhere- in which case, they need a note in the diary.

·         New Student ID cards will not be here until end of Feb. Students who were here last year can use last year’s card or even a previous year’s card until they get their new one. New students will need to use their diary as ID until then.

·         Students here in free periods need to sit in the study area at the back of the library. Please explain this to these students as frees will be new for many of them and they won’t be aware of the rules.

·         Finally, please treat our students like you treat the members of the public. Feedback from last year’s student survey suggested that students were not always happy with the way we addressed and dealt with them. I think their points are fair, so instead of saying ‘are you meant to be here’, you could try saying ‘how are you? Is there something I can help you with?’. One student asked us to be more understanding of students and have more manners. Please bear these comments in mind when dealing with the students. Remember, some students are new and don’t know the way we work, some may have forgotten. Be aware that some students may also be wanting a fresh start and they are entitled to this opportunity without us giving them a hard time.

Thanks, and if you have any questions, please ask me.

barcode scanning

When you are assisting customers on the Self check-out system please encourage them to check their name on the screen and their checkout slip. Barcode scanners can misread numbers from time to time and this can cause items to be checked out on someone else's record. Also, if you have a customer stating that they definitely have not borrowed an item that is checked out to them please keep this in mind as it can happen (it did to a customer this morning that I was helping).
