public WiFi for students

If students are having issues accessing Public WiFi on the MacBook Pro’s they will need to set the location to Public Library (under the apple symbol) before changing wireless networks. The instructions for this are on the info handout in the laptop folder and on COOLnet regarding using WiFi on these Macs at school, in the library and at home. Nathan

shelving changes - children's library

Just letting you know there has been a change in the children’s library - the Audio books and the CD’s have made a swap in where they were on the slatted wall.  This is so we can use the wall for information for parents. Jo

adding new cards to Monitor

Please ensure the barcode is entered into both  barcode fields. Nathan

headset trial

We are trialling the use of a hands free headset at the sit-down desk on the library floor to see if it is helpful if you need to move from the phone for any reason.
For example if you receive a call and need to check the shelves:

Ask your contact to hold the line for one moment
·         Place the handset on the desk in front of the phone (don’t hang up)
·         Pick up the headset, place on your head with the earpiece over your left or right ear
·         Press the button on the earpiece
·         Ask if your contact is there and continue the conversation
·         To end the call, press the button on the earpiece
·         Hang up the handset

Practice with a colleague by calling an extension in the workroom. Nathan

Publisher tip

Something to be aware of when printing publisher files on public PC’s, it will always print in colour (charging $1.50) unless you make the change from RGB to grayscale in the Office print menu. Nathan

If they are coming through the chute with the old spine label pleaes put into ON-REPAIR-SF. Also I have changed the Reference Collection A4 shelf end poster to reflect the Non-fiction DVD’s as this is where they live. Jo

Science Week

Just for your info, it is National Science Week beginning 16 Aug, so we are doing a competition again for the school kids to win a plasma ball.
This year there is one simple question they have to answer, but it requires them to use their imagination. At the end of the week the winner will be drawn randomly out of the box. If the winning entry has written an inappropriate response to the question, that person will not win the prize and we will redraw.
This is set up on the school side. Please turn on the plasma ball at the beginning of each day next week and turn it off when school finishes each day. If it is getting too hot at any point please turn it off for a rest. Karla

Coco mug display

Clues to the 891 ABC Adelaide #GoldCoco Challenge are on display in the library.
Customers are collecting Matt and Dave's audio, visual and verbal clues on 891’s on air, online and social media channels (twitter and facebook) to piece together where the #GoldCoco mug is hiding each week. Please support them finding clues in the library display.

shelving helper

I have created a visual guide to help volunteers (in particular) with reshelving and knowing where different collections live in the library. This is something that new casual staff or casuals who are not here often may find useful too.
It is hanging from the end of the trolley in the check-in room and can be taken off of the hook if a volunteer wants to take it with them as they reshelve etc.
If you get a chance, take a look at it so you know what the volunteers have available to them. Karla

movies

Just letting you all know that we are in the process of changing the spine labels for the DVD's, I have started the Movies so any that come back in with the old spine label need to be put into ON-REPAIR-SF and placed in the veggie trolley in the check-in room.
The changes will be:
DVD 791.43 will become MOVIES
DVD 791.45 will become TV
CDVD will become Children's
All the Non-Fiction DVD's will also be changed to different subjects eg: Transport, Lifestyle, House and garden
Any questions pls ask your Collections Team

games

I have put some new board games out to be used in the library. They are on the games shelf near the school doors. Please note that these are not on the catalogue and therefore not tagged, so they must stay in the library please. Karla

photocopier

The new photocopier has been installed and is operational. Please ensure that you have received instruction on how to use it. Albert
Scanning is now available to USB, let me know if you need training – you don’t need to wand a library card to do this. Nathan

charge kiosk

We have now installed the Monitor charge kiosk.
Have a look at the info regarding the new way of adding credit to cards, the instructions are laminated and in the pod, Monitor is on Only2clicks. Nathan
Please do not turn the Monitor Kiosk off at the power point before shutting it down – just quickly press the power button located on  the bottom right hand side of the screen near the scanner and Windows will commence the shutdown, if any apps pop-up as still running, touch “quit anyway”. Nathan

saddle stool

A new saddle stool has been acquired for library staff to improve comfort and safety. Feel free to use this stool for shelving work or other library tasks where work in a seated position occurs. It lives in the workroom next to the volunteers desk (please return it after use).

circ. assist.

Hi All,
Take time to look at the Circulation Assistant when performing circ. tasks, particularly when discarding items.
I have put some helper notes on the side of monitors with pads, refer to these as mistakes are still occurring.
The key to successful discarding is not having Manual selected, this should never be used.

study group arrangements

In relation to this study group arrangement, I have made the students up a little card each that they should present to library staff as well to make the whole process a little bit quicker and easier. I will be giving these to Denise in FLO to hand out to the students, and will be asking that they bring them each time they come in. (Please note that if they forget to bring it, I still have a message on their record saying that they are allowed to be in here, this is just to make it easier for everyone).
You will need to double check the name on their access card corresponds with their ID card so that other students don’t take them and use them. Thanks Karla

errors in shelving

There have been a lot of errors in the re-shelving recently. Please be careful when re-shelving to ensure that items that belong in a specific collection, i.e. Youth Collection or Parenting Collection, are put in that area rather than the general collection.
Conversely, (just in case casuals are not aware) our teenage non-fiction belongs in the general collection with the adult non-fiction, not in the Youth Collection unless it has a Youth Collection sticker.Karla

changes

There has been movement in the children's area if you haven't already noticed! The toy shelves have been moved so the recreation and sports library is now where the OPAC was (and this has been removed) and the graded readers are now on the slated shelving on the back wall. Jo

Just letting you know, in case you haven’t been around during the whole shake-up, that there have been a few changes made in the workroom and CKI room.
Shelving has been removed from the collections area and put in the CKI room. The purpose of this, is to house spares of items that don’t necessarily need to live in the workroom. This includes spare cases for CDs & DVDs, the little inserts that go inside these cases for extra discs, slip printer rolls, display acrylics and book stands,  community information brochure spares as well as library brochure spares. I have labelled most shelves, and have plans for the empty shelves, so if you could try to keep to this it will remain tidy and effective. The partials are now there too. Karla

coffee machine use by students

Just a reminder that the coffee machine near the newspapers is not for student use during school hours by request of the school.
Please, if you see students using it, let them know that they are not to use it during school hours, and let me know if they ignore you and use it anyway. Karla

placing holds

If a customer requests a title that is a SAPL On Order record and Onkaparinga do not have a copy on order, you can still add our customer to the request list. The SAPL ON Order item type was created especially to allow all customers to reserve any item on Symphony regardless of their home library. Even though in principle our customers would have to wait the 90 days, we actually run regular reports to check the SAPL on orders against our customer holds so that we can order copies for them. This way we can manage our customer holds and orders. Susan B
